About Building Without Consent
Recent changes to the building act mean you can now build small buildings without building consent, provided they meet certain conditions. Some of the main conditions are:
The building footprint must not exceed 30 square meters (for example, 4m wide and 7.5m long = 30 square meters)
Building height from floor to top of roof is less than 3.5m
No kitchens or bathrooms (no plumbing), but can include electricity, installed by a qualified electrician.
Building is more than its own height away from a residential building or boundary
